VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN (Board Policy 612-P)

This policy has been changed starting with the class of 2011.  For the transition period, both policies will be used to determine the valedictorian and salutatorian for the classes of 2009 and 2010.

I. Old Policy:

It is important to be aware of and understand the Valedictorian and Salutatorian Policy and the specific criteria which qualify a student to become a valedictorian or salutatorian at Lake City High School.

The academic achievement of graduating seniors shall be recognized through the following steps.

1.  Grade point shall be determined by the average of grades earned during the seven (7) semesters of s student’s high school career. (Grades earned during the final semester shall not count for the purpose of this policy). Refer to Policy 612, Class Ranking to determine GPA/Rank.

2.  STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

     A.  To be eligible for Valedictorian/Salutatorian, students must be in a college-preparatory program appropriate to colleges and universities. While in grades 9-10, students must complete four semesters of honors level course work. These courses must represent at least two subject areas from the following list, and courses must be designated as Honors, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate in the following subject areas: English, History, Biology, Chemistry and Pre-Calculus.

 B.  In addition to the above four credits, students in grades 11-12 must also complete at least 8 credits designated as Honors, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate courses in the following subject areas: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Government, English, a math course above Algebra II and a 4th year of a foreign language. The selected courses need to represent at least three of the following four areas: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

3.  MATHEMATICAL DEGREE OF SEPARATION

     A.  Not all students take the same number of classes, take the same number of weighted classes, and some students must take certain classes in order to participate in various school activities.  For all these reasons and more, it is clear that Grade Point Average is not a “perfect” measurement instrument.  At times, students are separated by minute fractional margins.  The statistical difference may have no truly academic cause.  Furthermore, a student should NEVER be motivated to drop/omit a class in order to obtain some type of mathematical advantage.

     B.  Therefore, the High School Administration may choose to further review valedictorian or salutatorian candidates who have cumulative Grade Point Averages that are virtually identical.  Such a review process helps to insure that a mathematical anomaly or other factors do not penalize a student that is truly worthy of valedictorian/salutatorian recognition.

4.  Thousandths may not be counted in determining ties.

5.  The student with the highest average shall be determined to be valedictorian. The student with the second highest average shall be determined to be salutatorian.
