This course is degined to allow students to explore character traits and to discover the characteristics that are needed to become an effective leader.  Students are given an opportunity to apply the knowledge they gain of character and leadership through the planning and implementation of a community service project.  Recommended for Team Captains, Club Leaders, and anyone who wants to strengthen their leadership skills.

9946 - STUDENT COUNCIL/LEADERSHIP 2 Credits/2 Semesters

This is a yearlong class designed for elected officers and representatives of LCHS ASB and student council. Students will increase their effectiveness as leaders through regular student council meetings and structured lessons. Students will gain knowledge in the areas of parliamentary procedure, goal setting, group processes, communication and managerial skills, and decision-making. Application of the knowledge is achieved through a variety of activities: weekly formal meetings where school-wide activities are discussed and approved; student presentations at regional state, and national conferences; the organization of homecoming activities and cross-town spirit/sportsmanship competitions; community service projects; student exchange programs; staff and student recognition projects; and class project presentations.
Prerequisite: Member of Student Council or Instructor Approval.
 

9974 - CAS/YVA (9,10,11,12) (Non-GPA Credit) Creativity, Action, Service  1 Credit/1 Semester

The primary focus of CAS is the development of the whole person and fosters more compassionate and active world citizens. Participation in the Lake City High School CAS program encourages students to be engaged in artistic pursuits, extra-curricular activities, and the community.  Growth through involvement builds students awareness and appreciation of life outside the academic arena and helps create a socially conscious world learner.  This course involves doing volunteer work outside of the regular school day on special events and for members of the community, young kids, the elderly, people with special needs, animals, the environment and more. The students must have 80 hours of service to receive the credit and can receive one CAS credit per semester. Students may complete their 80 hours of service in a semester or the year.

9978 - CAS/YVA  SCHOOL DAY (9, 10, 11, 12) (Non-GPA Credit) 1 Credit/1 Semester

The students will be actively involved in an area of study through a service-learning/CAS project in the Coeur d'Alene area. Students will be assigned to an ongoing volunteer site for the semester and will also be required to work in a small team with other students in the class to create and implement a volunteer project. Although there will be some structures lessons, most of the time will be spent at a volunteer site, or completing their service learning project. The main objectives for this class is for students to develop planning, organizational, communication and technical skills, as well as gain a greater level of awareness of civic responsibilities of their community. Students will evaluate and reflect on their own work and learning.

9966 - CAS/YVA  COUNCIL (11,12) 2 Credits/2 Semesters

The main objective of this small class will be to become better leaders by actually leading all projects sponsored by CAS. Although there will be some structured lessons, most of the time will be spent in organizing and in practical application. Students will choose one project or event that already takes place at LCHS and lead that event from beginning to end. In addition, he/she will organize a new project of his/her choosing, involving LCHS students and the community. Class members will also be responsible for recruiting and placing students into their volunteer areas. Each student will develop a portfolio.
Prerequisite: Instructor Approval.

9900 - SCHOOL AIDES (9, 10, 11, 12) {Non-G.P.A. Credit}{Pass/Fail} 1 Credit/1 Semester

Accuracy and neatness coupled with a good attitude and attendance are essential attributes in a student aspiring to be an aide. Aide positions include: Teacher Aides, Library Aides, and Office Aides. Only four (4) school aide credits can be counted towards graduation.
Prerequisite: Instructor and Administration Approval Required

9980 - WORK EXPERIENCE {Pass/Fail} (11,12) 1 Credit/1 Semester

Senior students who are employed part-time (no more than 20 hours/week) need to contact the Career Center. If a training plan can be put in place, one elective credit will be earned (Pass/Fail).
